Clipped Wings – A Poem by Kelly D. Tolman

Posted by admin on June 4, 2010

We teach a child to sing
And he sings.
We ask a bird to sing
And she sings.

Then we clip her wings.
Then we tell him “no.”
So she can’t fly
And he doesn’t fly.

For safety,
So she doesn’t leave
The world we want him to know
Behind.
To do
What she was born to do
What he was born to do.

Wow that’s a cool poem really. I want to know why does the author compares the bird and a child? is it like the child is meant to be on his own just like a free bird or something?
