Standardized Test – A Poem by Kelly D. Tolman

Posted by admin on January 31, 2011

When truth bites,
A bitter knife
Cutting quick to pride,
Does passion fail?

When a mirror raises
Images praising
Something less than great,
Is humble made hale?

What then when the water
ripples,
Scattering face
From wave to wave?

Is the being less
Because the image is glass?
Is flesh become weak
when judgment is strong?

Does Spirit die
When testing lies?
The chaff may rise
While the wheat lies
Chafing in the loam
Of Society’s inescapable scorn.

Truth is.
Being is.
Naked or clothed,
Mirrored or shadowed,
Essence is not
Undone.
